King, UN chief discuss regional developments

18 September 2017

His Majesty King Abdullah met on Sunday with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters, and discussed current regional developments, as well as efforts by Jordan and the UN to reach political solutions to crises in the region.

Discussions addressed developments in Syria, especially de-escalation zones and efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis within the Geneva process, in addition to conditions in Iraq.

The two sides also focused in their meeting on the importance of breaking the stalemate in the peace process and relaunching serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on the two-state solution and international terms of reference.

Moreover, the meeting touched on the additional pressures brought on Jordan’s economy and limited resources by the Syrian refugee crisis, and the need for the international community to increase its support for host countries, especially Jordan, to enable them to continue to provide humanitarian and relief services to refugees.

Discussions covered the UN’s efforts to boost its relief, development, and international conflict resolution efforts.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, Planning Minister Imad Fakhoury, and Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Sima Bahous attended the meeting.
