King receives UNRWA commissioner general

26 March 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday received UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krähenbühl, on the sidelines of the Laureates and Leaders for Children Summit 2018, taking place at the Dead Sea.

The meeting covered the challenges facing UNRWA, especially financial difficulties, and means to address them to ensure that the UN agency continues to provide its vital services to over 5 million registered Palestinian refugees.

King Abdullah affirmed the importance of continuing UNRWA’s humanitarian role towards refugees.

His Majesty said the international community must shoulder its responsibility and provide sufficient support to enable the UN agency to continue providing educational, healthcare, and relief services to refugees.

Krähenbühl praised Jordan’s efforts, led by the King, to urge regional and international parties to help UNRWA overcome current unprecedented challenges.

The UN official noted Jordan’s initiative to call for the recently held conference in Rome to galvanise international political and financial support for UNRWA, enhance the agency’s efficiency, expand its donor base, and develop plans that ensure sustainable financing to narrow its deficit.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas attended the meeting.
