28 January 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday received the moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Dr Derek Browning, at Al Husseiniya Palace to discuss the importance of promoting interfaith dialogue and cementing the values of tolerance and coexistence.

Discussions at the meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi bin Muhammed, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, touched on the initiatives launched by Jordan to encourage dialogue and understanding among the followers of different faiths, such as the Amman Message, the World Interfaith Harmony Week, and A Common Word.

King Abdullah affirmed that Jordan will persist in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite Custodianship.

Christian holy sites, His Majesty underlined, receive the same care and attention as Islamic holy sites.

For his part, Reverend Browning expressed appreciation for the King’s efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region, and promote the values of dialogue and tolerance.

He also commended His Majesty’s efforts to safeguard Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship, stressing that Jordan represents a model of brotherhood and tolerance.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh attended the meeting.
