King receives EU foreign affairs chief

9 June 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah on Saturday received High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and discussed Jordan’s partnership with the European Union and means to enhance it.

Discussions also covered the reforms Jordan is undertaking to overcome economic and fiscal challenges brought on by regional crises.

The meeting addressed the latest developments in the region, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause.

King Abdullah stressed the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, based on the two-state solution, and leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Discussions also touched on the importance of reaching political solutions to crises in the Middle East, especially in Syria, where His Majesty called for maintaining the de-escalation zone in southwestern Syria, established last year under a trilateral Jordanian-US-Russian agreement.

For her part, Mogherini voiced the EU’s appreciation of Jordan’s efforts, led by the King, to bring peace, security, and stability to the region.

She called on the international community to uphold its responsibilities towards Jordan by providing support to enable the Kingdom to overcome challenges.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas, and EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Matteo Fontana attended the meeting.
