King meets Palestinian president

30 April 2017

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as part of ongoing coordination to generate momentum for the Palestinian issue.

The meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace, covered efforts to revive the peace process and the outcomes of King Abdullah’s recent talks in Washington, DC, with US President Donald Trump, as well as Abbas' planned visit to the US.

The two sides underlined the importance of relaunching serious and effective talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis, based on the two-state solution as the only way to resolve the conflict, arriving at the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Moreover, His Majesty and Abbas discussed the Arab Peace Initiative, which was relaunched during the recent Arab Summit in Jordan.

The initiative, the King said, is the most comprehensive framework to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

Talks also underlined the importance of maintaining the historical status quo in Jerusalem, due to its importance as a holy city for Arabs and Muslims.

The two leaders expressed their rejection of all unilateral Israeli measures, which pose a threat to the holy city's Arab identity.

Discussions covered the latest regional developments, in addition to the crises facing Arab countries and means to reach political solutions.

The Palestinian president expressed appreciation for Jordan’s efforts, led by His Majesty, to support the rights of the Palestinian people and their just cause.

Prime Minister Hani Mulki, Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Adnan Jundi also attended the meeting.
