King meets Japanese FM

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday received Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, who is currently in Jordan as part of a regional visit, at Basman Palace.

The two sides discussed Jordanian-Japanese strategic cooperation and means to advance it in the political, economic, trade, and investment fields.

King Abdullah expressed appreciation for Japan’s support to Jordan’s development efforts, in addition to the assistance it provides to enable the Kingdom to continue to offer humanitarian and relief services to Syrian refugees.

Discussions also covered current regional developments, foremost of which is efforts to move the Palestinian-Israeli peace process forward by relaunching serious and effective negotiations between the two sides, based on the two-state solution as the only way to resolve the conflict.

The two sides discussed the Corridor for Peace and Prosperity initiative launched by Japan nearly 10 years ago to bolster peace efforts in the region.

His Majesty voiced his appreciation for Japan’s major role in working towards regional and global peace.

The meeting also addressed the Syrian crisis and efforts to reach a political solution that guarantees Syria’s territorial integrity and ensures the safety of its people.

In addition, discussions touched on the international and regional efforts to fight terrorism within a holistic strategy.

The Japanese foreign minister expressed his country’s appreciation of Jordan’s efforts, led by the King, to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, praising the Kingdom’s humanitarian role in responding to the Syrian refugee crisis.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, Japan’s Ambassador to Jordan Shuichi Sakurai, and the accompanying Japanese delegation attended the meeting.
