King meets heads of official media, chief editors, and columnists

29 July 2017

His Majesty King Abdullah met on Saturday with directors of official media outlets, chief editors of local newspapers, the president of the Jordan Press Association, and several columnists to discuss key local and regional issues.

Discussions at the meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace, covered the recent crisis at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, including efforts to reopen it in its entirety, restore the situation there to what it had been prior to the crisis, and ensure that the historical and legal status quo is preserved.

King Abdullah praised the perseverance of Jerusalemites, reaffirming the importance of the joint Jordanian-Palestinian position in the face of the crisis.

His Majesty also singled out the important role of the Jerusalem Awqaf Department in restoring normalcy.

Jerusalem and the Palestinian issue are Jordan’s first priority, the King said, noting that the Kingdom will continue to play its historical role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian sites in the holy city.

His Majesty added that he always highlights the Palestinian issue and the need to safeguard Jerusalem at international forums, stressing that Jordan’s voice on this matter stands out like no other.

Jordan is committed to its historical, political, and legal role by providing the grounds to prevent the Judaisation of holy sites, despite the enormity of the challenge, the King said.

His Majesty stressed the need to coordinate between all the relevant parties to ensure that the historical and legal status quo at Al Haram Al Sharif is preserved.

Turning to the incident at the Israeli embassy in Amman last week, where two Jordanians were killed, the King reaffirmed that Jordan will not relinquish the rights of its sons, expressing commitment to dedicating all efforts to ensure that justice is served.

His Majesty questioned the absence of former officials who had failed to speak up in times of crises.

The meeting also covered the ceasefire agreement in southwest Syria—reached recently by Jordan, the US, and Russia—with the King noting some positive signs and clarity in the road ahead for Syria and Iraq.

His Majesty expressed optimism over conditions in Iraq and the potential to reopen the Jordanian-Iraqi border crossing this year.

Discussions also covered the role of the media in addressing local and regional issues objectively and professionally by developing the latest tools to adapt to an evolving media landscape, where social media features prominently, and provide accurate, timely information to enhance public trust in state institutions.

His Majesty said any attempts to question military and security institutions are unacceptable, stressing that the armed forces are a red line.

For their part, the attendees affirmed Jordan’s important role, led by the King, in reaching a solution to the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif crisis, praising His Majesty’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of Jordanians.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan attended the meeting.
