His Majesty King Abdullah met on Tuesday separately with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and international peace envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and discussed the Syrian crisis and its effect on the future of the region, the developments in the Middle East peace process and the achievements of the Kingdom in terms of political reform.

King Abdullah voiced concerns over the worsening situation in Syria and the rise in violence, which he said was reaching an unprecedented level of bloodshed and destruction.

The King warned of a grave escalation in the situation if an exit is not found soon.
The 200,000 Syrian refugees Jordan is hosting despite its scarce resources and the Kingdom’s need for international support to maintain the level of services figured high in the King’s discussions.

On the latest Mideast peace developments, His Majesty stressed the need for the international community to spare no effort to revive negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, meeting the Palestinians’ legitimate demands for an independent state within the 1967 borders, living in peace with Israel.

His Majesty also strongly rejected constant attempts by Israel to Judaise the Christian and Muslim religious legacy and history in Jerusalem.

The only alternative to peace is more tension, lack of security and an unknown future for the nations of the region, the King warned.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty’s Office Director Imad Fakhoury and Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN His Highness Prince Zeid Bin Raad attended the two meetings.
