12 March 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held talks at Al Husseiniya Palace on Monday that covered the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause and efforts to push the peace process forward.

The two sides stressed the need to maintain coordination and consultations over developments on the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem.

His Majesty reaffirmed Jordan’s full support for the Palestinian people and defending their legitimate rights to liberty and independent statehood on Palestinian national soil.

The King also underlined that Jordan will continue to work in coordination with all the concerned parties to revive the peace process and relaunch Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative, and international law and relevant UN resolutions, arriving at the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

His Majesty asserted that reaching just and comprehensive peace is the only way to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and achieve security and stability in the region.

The King reiterated Jordan’s rejection of unilateral Israeli measures and frequent violations against holy sites in Jerusalem, affirming that Jordan will continue to undertake its historical role of safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship.

President Abbas commended Jordan’s efforts, led by His Majesty, in defending the Palestinian cause, supporting the Palestinian people, and safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Adnan Jundi, and Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas attended the talks.

On the Palestinian side, Palestine Liberation Organisation Secretary General Saeb Erekat, Fatah central committee member and head of civil affairs Hussein Sheikh, General Intelligence Service Director Majid Faraj, Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh, Senior Diplomatic Adviser to the President Majdi Khaldi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Atallah Kheiri were in attendance.
