King holds talks with Palestinian president

29 January 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held talks at Al Husseiniya Palace on Monday, within the framework of the ongoing coordination and consultation over the developments connected to the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.

At bilateral talks that were followed by an expanded meeting, King Abdullah affirmed that Jordan, at various international forums, continues to defend the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinians to independent statehood on the 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as their capital.

His Majesty said the international community must uphold its responsibility to safeguard the rights of Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims, and Christians to Jerusalem, which is the key to regional peace and stability.

Discussions covered the important role of UNRWA and the need for the international community to support it, since 6 million Palestinian refugees are registered with the UN.

President Abbas briefed the King on the meetings he has held with various international actors on dealing with threats to the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.

The Palestinian president expressed his and the Palestinian people’s appreciation of the united Jordanian-Palestinian position, and the major efforts exerted by Jordan, led by His Majesty, to support the Palestinians and help them gain their legitimate rights, as well as safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite Custodianship.

Senior officials on both sides attended the expanded meeting.
