King holds talks with Egyptian president

His Majesty King Abdullah held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in Cairo on Wednesday, focusing on current regional issues and means to forge closer ties between the two countries.

During a one-on-one meeting at Heliopolis Palace, followed by expanded talks attended by senior officials from both countries, King Abdullah and Sisi voiced their pride in the distinguished ties between the two countries, as well as their keenness to boost them further in various fields.

At the meeting, new development projects in Egypt were showcased, including the new administrative capital, with the two sides agreeing to look into cooperation in infrastructure and joint projects.

During the talks, held as part of Jordanian-Egyptian coordination and consultation on various regional issues, the two sides called for political solutions to crises in the region to bring security and stability.

His Majesty stressed Egypt’s key role in serving Arab causes as well as its relentless efforts to enhance Arab cooperation.

The two leaders agreed to continue work to unify Arab ranks and coordinate stances, highlighting the important role of Jordan, as a president of the Arab Summit, in enhancing joint Arab action to overcome challenges and crises facing the region.

The King and Sisi also reiterated the need to move the peace process forward and launch serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis to reach a just and permanent solution to the Palestinian issue, based on the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international terms of reference.

The two sides stressed the importance of maintaining the status quo in Jerusalem, warning that changing it will have dangerous consequences on the region's security and stability.

His Majesty stressed that Jordan, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship, will continue its role in defending Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem to safeguard the Arab identity of the city.

The talks also addressed the Syrian crisis and the latest developments in Iraq, Libya, and Yemen.

The two sides also reaffirmed the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to fight terrorism within a holistic strategy to counter its threat to global security and stability.

The Egyptian president voiced his country's appreciation of Jordan's stances, praising the King's role in the service of Arab causes and his efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.

Sisi hosted a lunch banquet in honour of His Majesty and the accompanying delegation, attended by senior Egyptian officials.

Prime Minister Hani Mulki, Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Adnan Jundi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, Adviser to His Majesty and National Policies Council Rapporteur Abdullah Wreikat, and Jordan’s Ambassador to Egypt Ali Ayed attended the talks from the Jordanian side.

Earlier, upon arrival at Heliopolis Palace, the King was received with an official welcoming ceremony that included a 21-gun salute.
