King chairs follow-up meeting on implementation of public sector reform
His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday chaired a follow-up meeting on the implementation of the public sector reform plan and the progress of the e-government programme.
During the meeting, held at Al Husseiniya Palace and attended by Prime Minister Hani Mulki, King Abdullah stressed the importance of full commitment to reforming the public sector and overcoming any obstacles that may hinder this strategic process that benefits all Jordanians.
The meeting also included a review of programmes related to public sector reform, including the implementation of the e-government programme.
His Majesty stressed the need for cooperation among all ministries and various institutions to carry out the plan without delay.
The King said that anyone who hampers these programmes or other plans to improve economic performance and develop services will be held accountable, adding that efforts of every official will be assessed.
Discussions at the meeting also covered the need for ministries and public institutions to comply with the switch to an e-government.
His Majesty thanked the prime minister for following up on the implementation of the government’s plans and programmes.
For his part, Mulki said a number of government services will be fully computerised by 1 January 2018.
The premier noted that the services include renewing vocational licences, traffic ticket inquiry and payment, real estate tax inquiry and payment, land registration, licensing vehicles that do not require a technical test, subscribing to social security, and issuing non-conviction certificates.
He added that health insurance, civil status and companies’ registration will also be computerised by the end of 2017, underlining the importance of partnership between the public and private sectors in implementing these plans.
Also during the meeting, ICT Minister and Public Sector Development Minister Majd Shweikeh presented a briefing on the government’s plans to implement e-services within a clear timeframe, as well as measures that will be taken to reform the public sector to serve citizens and improve the performance of various institution.
Shweikeh cited the recent amendments to the civil service by-law to introduce criteria to assess public sector employees with the aim of encouraging excellence and ensuring accountability.
Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan also attended the meeting.
