King calls for final and enduring solution to ME conflict

18 January 2009

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday stressed the need to find a final and enduring solution to Palestinian-Israeli conflict, asserting that now is the time to engage in serious negotiations that should resolve the conflict in 2009.

He made the remarks at a press conference after Arab and world leaders met over the crisis Gaza in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

At the summit, King Abdullah called on the international community to take action to find a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue this year.

The King said: "If we do not take action towards a permanent solution based on the two-state solution, world leaders will find themselves once again forced to convene to address a new Israeli aggression on the Palestinians."

King Abdullah stressed the need to reach a permanent ceasefire that prevents a recurrence of Israeli aggression against the Palestinians in the future.

King Abdullah called on the European states and the international community to work towards a peace that conforms to the principles outlined in the Arab Peace Initiative, the basic condition of which is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state to ensure peace, security and stability in the region.

His Majesty voiced appreciation for Egypt's efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to prevent the continuation of the crisis and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. He also called on the international community, including the European countries, to ensure the entry of humanitarian and medical assistance and foodstuff into the Gaza Strip and to open border crossings and lift the siege to end the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza.

Upon his arrival in Sharm El Sheikh, King Abdullah met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The two leaders discussed means to sustain the ceasefire and to protect and support the Palestinians. Jordan had agreed with the European Troika and other representatives of the international community to find ways to provide humanitarian and medical aid to the Palestinians in Gaza.

Later in the day, King Abdullah arrived in Kuwait on a two-day visit where he will take part in the Arab Economic, Development and Social Summit, slated to start on Monday.
