28 January 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday received a delegation at Al Husseiniya Palace from the steering committee of the Laureates and Leaders Summit for Children 2018, which will be held at the Dead Sea from 26 to 27 March.

At the meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, King Abdullah stressed the importance of the topics covered by the summit, namely means to provide education for refugee and internally displaced children and prevent their exploitation and abuse.

The delegation comprised Lorena Castillo de Varela, first lady of Panama and UNAIDS special ambassador for AIDS in Latin America; José Ramos-Horta, former president of Timor-Leste and the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate; and Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian activist on child rights and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The Laureates and Leaders Summit for Children was launched by Satyarthi with the aim of bringing together Nobel laureates, world leaders, and youth activists to prepare a global action plan to protect children.

The first summit took place in New Delhi, India in December 2016.

Participants in this year’s summit will examine the challenges faced by children in times of crises, while examining potential actions to protect them from exploitation, trafficking, slavery, and abuse, and ensure their education.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh attended the meeting.
