King meets Spanish monarch, German chancellor, and PMs of Lebanon, Kurdistan Region, Albania

His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday continued a series of meetings on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, with Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah attending part of the meetings.

King Abdullah met with King Felipe VI of Spain, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the Council of Ministers of Lebanon Saad Hariri, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama.

His Majesty and King Felipe VI discussed the historical ties of partnership and friendship between Jordan and Spain, as well as regional developments.

The two sides affirmed their keenness to solidify cooperation between the two countries and advance them to further heights in all areas, especially in the economic, investment, energy, and infrastructure sectors.

The King and the Spanish monarch also affirmed the importance of maintaining coordination and consultations on various issues, in the service of mutual concerns and global peace and security.

Discussions touched on current developments in the Middle East, and regional and international efforts in the fight against terrorism.

The meeting with Chancellor Merkel, attended by Queen Rania, covered ways to advance cooperation and coordination between Jordan and Germany, as well as regional issues. 

The two sides also stressed their commitment to build on ties in various sectors, particularly in economic, commercial, development-related, and military areas.

His Majesty thanked Germany for its support, stressing the importance of bolstering it in development and economic projects.

Discussions also addressed the developments connected to the peace process and Jerusalem, with the two sides affirming that the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The King reaffirmed the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims and Christians, stressing that the holy city is key to regional peace and stability, and that this issue must be settled within the framework of a final status solution.

Moreover, the meeting covered the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan’s economy and limited resources.

His Majesty, accompanied by Her Majesty, also met with President of the Council of Ministers of Lebanon Hariri and discussed developments in Lebanon and the region.

The King affirmed the deep historical and brotherly ties that Jordan and Lebanon share, stressing that the Kingdom fully supports Lebanon’s efforts to overcome challenges and maintain its national unity, sovereignty, security, and stability, with the goal of securing a better future for the Lebanese people.

His Majesty said Jordan is keen on cementing and expanding its cooperation with Lebanon, particularly in the economic, commercial, and investment fields.

The meeting also covered the latest regional developments, especially those connected to the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, as well as the impact of the Syrian crisis on the two countries and the influx of refugees.

Discussions touched on UNRWA’s important role and the services it provides in education, healthcare, and relief for refugees, which require securing the necessary support for the agency to enable it to uphold its humanitarian responsibilities.

The meeting with Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq Barzani tackled the developments in Iraq and efforts to reach national reconciliation.

Discussions also addressed opportunities to bolster Jordan’s ongoing cooperation with the Kurdistan Region, especially in economic and investment-related areas.

His Majesty called for working in accordance with Iraq’s constitution to rebuild trust and understanding among the various components of the Iraqi community to achieve stability and prosperity for Iraq.

Also on Wednesday, the King met with Albanian Prime Minister Rama and discussed opportunities for cooperation and means to advance it in various fields, particularly in economic-related areas.

Discussions covered regional and international developments, as well as efforts to fight terrorism, which threatens global security and stability.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and Planning Minister Imad Fakhoury attended the meetings.
