19 September 2018

His Majesty King Abdullah met on Wednesday with the president and members of the Jordan Press Association (JPA) council and reviewed media and domestic issues of concern, as well as the latest regional and international developments.

During a meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah said Jordan is facing economic challenges but it will overcome them, emphasising the media’s role in highlighting achievements and practising an oversight role.

His Majesty also commended the JPA’s efforts in developing the professional performance of journalist.

Professional and responsible media have a critical role in covering national issues, and enriching national debates, the King added, stressing that Jordan is moving ahead in its reform process.

His Majesty said it is necessary to evaluate and develop elections and political parties laws to ensure wider participation in decision making, as well as empower youth to engage in advancing the country.

Presenting information accurately, amidst the spread of misleading and false news, is the responsibility of media outlets, the King continued, urging state institutions to provide journalists with information to protect citizens from rumours.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of the media’s key role in countering extremism and protecting youth from its evil ideologies, which contradict the teachings of Islam.

The King noted that he is heading to New York to participate in the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations and to meet with world leaders on its sidelines to discuss issues of interests to Jordan, the Palestinian cause and means to support UNRWA, as well as the Syrian refugee crisis.

For their part, the president and members of the JPA council affirmed their keenness to develop the profession in the service of Jordan’s interests.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi and Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas attended the meeting.
