King criticizes slow pace of work on Zarqa hospital

7 May 2007

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday criticized the slow pace of work on a new hospital in Zarqa Governorate during a surprise visit to the state-run Zarqa hospital.

In 2004, the King donated a 112-square-kilometre plot of land to establish a new hospital to meet an increasing demand for treatment at the city's sole public hospital.

The King also expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of public services to citizens particularly in the health sector after his sudden and unexpected visit to Zarqa government hospital.

The King said he ordered a prompt implementation of the plan as well as medical supplies and equipment to the existing hospital, built in 1961.

Briefed on health, environment and educational challenges in the governorate, His Majesty said the Cabinet will meet Thursday in Zarqa to draw a strategy on tackling the problems.

King Abdullah added that he knows Zarqa very well during his military service and he knows the problems facing its residents particularly those related to poverty, unemployment and environment pollution.

During his visit to Zarqa, the King opened the Hashemieh Healthcare Centre, which includes dental, paediatric and maternity sections fully equipped with advanced equipment and an emergency room.

King Abdullah also inaugurated a multipurpose village, constructed over 8,600 dunums, comprising a park, a playground, a theatre and other facilities.
